Mangalore Diocese's Journey Toward Collaboration with Same Diocese

Bishop Aloysius Paul D’Souza of Mangalore has announced that the diocese is exploring avenues for missionary work in the Same Diocese of Tanzania, guided by discernment of the Spirit.

On June 27, 2012, Bishop D’Souza led a team of five priests from Mangalore on a 10-day visit to Same for an on-site study.

“We have, in principle, decided to take up missions in Same,” shared Bishop D’Souza. “However, a final decision will be made after thoroughly examining various aspects, and the details of collaboration will be worked out later.”

Support for Same Diocese in Tanzania

Bishop Rogatus Kimaryo of Same Diocese had previously requested support for the mission, and his visit to Mangalore in April for consultations further strengthened the collaboration.

Ursuline Franciscan Sister Susheela Sequeira, Assistant General of the Mangalore-based congregation, praised the initiative as a "fine step." She shared that her congregation has been involved in mission work in Same and three other Tanzanian dioceses since 2004 and has since seen the growth of local vocations.

Fr. Vincent Furtado, Provincial of the Karnataka Capuchin Province, highlighted the involvement of 11 of his priests in missions across four dioceses in Uganda, where they too have fostered local vocations.

Fr. Archibald Gonsalves, Provincial of the Karnataka Carmelite Province (OCD), noted that his province has been active in Tanzania and South Africa for over 30 years.
